Who we are: The Riverside Dickens Festival
The Riverside Dickens Festival is a long‑standing cultural tradition founded in 1992, when community visionaries Carolyn Grant and Joan Patton persuaded the Friends of the Riverside Library that the city needed a literary event celebrating the works of Charles Dickens and the vibrancy of Victorian culture. With little more than determination, creativity, and countless volunteer hours, the very first festival came to life on a warm September weekend — a grassroots effort that immediately captured the imagination of the community.
As the festival grew, it established its own independent board of directors, transitioning from a library‑supported idea into a fully volunteer‑run nonprofit organization dedicated to literacy, historical education, and the performing arts. In 1994, the festival moved to the first weekend of February to honor Charles Dickens’ birthday on February 7, aligning the celebration more closely with the author’s legacy and giving the event a permanent home on the city’s cultural calendar.
Over the decades, the Riverside Dickens Festival has expanded in scope, artistry, and community impact. What began as a modest literary gathering has evolved into a multi‑day immersive experience featuring costumed characters, historical reenactments, live performances, educational outreach, Victorian merchants, and interactive programming for all ages. The festival’s mission — to promote literacy, provide educational entertainment, and explore the social parallels between Victorian times and today — continues to guide its growth and programming.
Now entering its 34th year, the Riverside Dickens Festival continues to grow beyond its beloved literary roots, blossoming into a vibrant celebration of imagination, history, and community. What began as a tribute to the timeless works of Charles Dickens has evolved into a richly layered experience that now includes steampunk adventures, fantasy realms, and the mischievous magic of our new KnockTurn Alley. The festival welcomes visitors into a world where Victorian tradition meets creative innovation — where airships drift above cobblestone streets, enchanted books glow in children’s hands, and characters from across time and genre mingle in joyful harmony.
Our commitment to education has expanded as well, with a strengthened Educational Outreach program, classroom visits, and free lesson plans designed to bring Dickensian themes, Victorian history, and literacy into schools throughout the region. These efforts ensure that the festival’s impact reaches far beyond the event weekend, inspiring curiosity and creativity in the next generation of readers, thinkers, and storytellers.
Still powered by passionate volunteers and rooted in the spirit of community, the Riverside Dickens Festival remains one of Riverside’s most cherished cultural traditions. Each year, thousands of visitors, performers, educators, and families gather to celebrate storytelling in all its forms — from classic literature to fantastical re‑imaginings — proving that the magic of Dickens, and the worlds he inspires, continue to thrive in ever‑expanding and wondrous ways.
